Fabienne in the Shelby SR2 can-am

21st May 2016-Fabienne was invited by the Fantastic Racing team to join round three of the National Sports Car Challenge, part of the Extreme Festival at Zwartkops raceway last weekend.

The Sports car challenge is a one make series made up of Shelby Can-Am prototype cars, and the first time Fabienne has raced such a machine.

Stepping into the car for the first time during practice, Fabienne took time to understand the power and dynamics of the car with its Nissan 3.5L V6 engine giving out 350 horsepower and extra down force.

“It was my first outing in a prototype like this, so I wanted to gain as much from the experience as possible, during practice and qualifying I was still learning about the car,” said Fabienne.

Fabienne took the challenge in her stride racing on the familiar 2.4km Zwartkops track with its tight slow speed corners.

“I did struggle a bit with this car on the smaller Zwartkops track as I there was so much power there just waiting to let loose so it was difficult to keep it all under control with the understeer, its total change to my 125cc race kart.”

I improved on every outing and even learnt a few things during the 10 lap 30 minute race and managed to finish the race in one piece, with a third in the SP2 class.

“This is part of my long term race plans to continue to race in prototype racing, I would love to enter races like Le Mans one day so it’s a small step forward in the right direction and im very grateful for the opportunity to race with Fantastic Racing team.”

Fabeinne hopes to race in other events in the National series, with the next round coming up on June 18th at her home track in Kyalami.

Fabienne raced with the Fantastic Racing Team based in Gauteng who mainly run corporate racing events and also hire out race cars including the Shelby Can-Am cars.
