Round 3 of the Vortex Super Rok ENGEN Supa Karts National Series was held at iDube Raceway in Pietermaritzburg. I am pleased to say that it looked like the Super Rok field is growing again as there were 16 competitors in the field. We even had an exceptionally talented karter, very well known, Leeroy Poulter join us.
The weekend started off really good, we had good pace and were lying in the top 3 until the track had built up so much grip from all the karters, we struggled to find pace in that amount of grip. I could not get that kart to turn and then out of the corners it had too much traction. I struggled with it all weekend.
We did a daring move on Saturday morning, the day of the race. We decided that it is do or die. We cannot drive where we are… So we I some daring moves and the kart handled a reasonable amount better, we qualified 4th on the grid.
As the day progressed, it got warmer and the adjustments we made were not enough. The kart would handle for the first 5 or 6 laps and then start to bog down badly.
The 2nd heat started off really well. I had a fantastic start and moved from 5th into 3rd in the first corner. I held that position for a couple of laps and then a few overtook me and I finished 5th. I had a cool dice with my fellow team mate, Simon Moss, at the end of that heat.
We finished 5th for the day. We would have wanted a better finish, but I always say, “this is better than having a kart failure or being involved in a crash”. Sometimes it does not pan out the way you want it.
The last round of this national series will be on the 09th of August at Vereeniging, my home track. We want to do quite extensive testing there before hand to try and get rid of this of this massive amount of grip my kart has.
